Peptic ulcer is a term which includes the diseases viz., gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer. Basic principle is to use bland food in small quantities frequently to neutralize the hyperacidity. Whole milk is the ideal food for this purpose and must be taken in liberal quantities, Boiled potatoes, white pumpkin, over ripe banana, steamed apple, jelly, prorridge of sago (tapioca), puddings and various Indian preparation like ‘lapshi’, ‘shira’, etc., may be included. Main things to avoid are tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, spices, condiments, hot foods, pickles, etc. There is also a current trend which advocates total exclusion of salt from diet. Similar bland food will also be required for gastritis, hyperacidity and similar conditions.
