Diet in Kidney Stone

>> Thursday, October 8, 2009

Stone in the urinary passages require modification in the diet depending upon the nature of the stone and the damage it has done to the kidney in particular and the whole body in general. In an uncomplicated stone, the composition of the stone dictates the food to be avoided. Thus, in an oxalate stone, the patient should avoid tomato, ginger, tamarind, radish, onion, lady’s finger, salad, wheat, colocasia, yam, potato skin, etc., whereas in a uric acid stone one should not take tea, coffee, pulses, liver, meat, kidney, nuts like cashew, ground nuts, etc. In mixed stones, both types of foods have to be avoided. In any case, the patient should be encouraged to drink plenty of water unless there is suppression of urine. When complication like suppuration, infection or obstruction supervenes, a doctor must be immediately consulted.
