Diet in Jaundice
>> Saturday, October 3, 2009
Infectious hepatits is the commonest cause of jaundice. Patients usually have a total loss of appetite, and they get nausea, vomiting and retching. The diet, therefore, has to be appetizing. It should be given in small quantities and should be given in small quantities and should include plenty of fluids, fruit juice, sugarcane juice glucose and maltose. Foods, rich in calories like rice, bread, butter, chocolates, ice creams, etc., should also be given. As long as there is vomiting, such irritants as tea, coffee, condiments, spices, alcohol, fried foods, etc., should be avoided but later on, normal food should be taken. There is a common notion in the lay public that milk, cream, butter and ghee are harmful. This is of course not true. Patient can take whatever he can retain and whatever he likes
