Safe water supply: The drinking water should be free from all the harmful impurities affecting health. The most dangerous of these are disease producing germs. Source of supply is usually surface water like rivers, ponds, etc. Such water supply should be filtered and chlorinated. Subsequently contamination on safe water need be avoided.
Proper food in sufficient quantity: Food should be of such quality and in such quantity as to provide for the necessary energy, growth, repair of body tissues and protection from diseases. It should be free from any contamination.
Sanitary disposal of faecal matter and other wastes: The best system of disposal is the one where the faecal matter is not permitted to contaminate the water supply, the food or the soil. A good method of disposal is the flush system for the water carriage system. At many places, this is neither possible nor practicable, because of poverty. But cheaper and non-service type of sanitary latrines can be constructed.
Similarly, hygienic disposal of other wastes, refuse, waste water, etc., is essential for making the environment conductive to health.
