Diet in Diarrhoeas
>> Thursday, September 24, 2009
Diarrhoeas are particularly common in infants and are dealt with separately elsewhere. In adults, diarrhea is usually infective, helminthes or dietetic and the diet would depend on the cause. In general, people with frequent or loose motions should avoid all leafy vegetables, salads, etc., (which is the diet recommended for constipation) and should take tea, coffee, soup, soft rice, over ripe banana, apple and strained fruit juice. All spices, condiments, hot foods and fried foods should be avoided. There are, as already mentioned, certain specific diseases where the diarrhea will stop if a certain food is discontinued, e.g., in celiac disease and non tropical sprue, glutain free diet and in pancreatic insufficiency, fat free diet will have to be used. Certain sugars are not tolerated by individuals with specific enzyme deficiencies and their omission from the diet will cure the condition. This also applies to allergic diarrhoeas.
